31 Mar 11

It goes without saying for tortoise the tax advisor that all days are long this time of year.  Today was extra long, and that is a good thing.  First of all, being busy beats unemployment as an alternative every time.  So I was glad to have one client meeting in St. George to start the day and four more in Mesquite as the day continued.

I also enjoyed a session at the temple this evening.  My heart was full.  I am thankful for many blessings right now and was glad for a chance to say prayers of thankfulness there tonight.  I am thankful for my family, for health, for help with my work, and more.

No visit with Terreeeblay today.   Instead I had a 14 minutes walk in the fresh air, you can read the details at http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/76.html

30 Mar 11

Thought for today:  1 John 3:2 "Beloved, now are we the sons of God..we know that, when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is.."

I ate something that didn't set well with me today, and struggled much of the afternoon and evening, but managed to recover in time to have a nice visit with Terreeeblay:  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/75.html

Thought for the day:  1 Peter 3:8 "Finally, be ye all of one mind, having compassion one of another, love as brethren, be pitiful, be courteous"

Terreeblay update:  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/74.html

The bishop, his counselors, and the high priests' group leader went with the stake president, one of his counselors and two high councilors to visit families in the ward for bishopric meeting tonight.  So after the opening prayer, that left me with an open evening to ... continue training my two new assistant clerks.  It went well!

28 Mar 11

I spent 26 minutes with my friend Terreeeblay today http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/73.html and I got to see Maude for home evening.  How can you have a better day than that?

27 Mar 2011

I have two new assistant ward clerks working with me, Brother Tullis (finance) and Brother Stevens (membership).  I am cross-training them to back each other up, which I am hoping will let me focus more on keeping leadership meeting minutes and the statistical and historical clerk duties.  So when Brother Tullis was excused today from helping the bishopric process donations, instead of simply covering for him, I used it as an opportunity to train Brother Stevens.  It went well, and I'm smiling!

There is a big emphasis on doing family history and temple work in our stake this year.  The 4th Ward had this poster up in both foyers of the building today, it caught my eye:

26 Mar 2011

Smiling reading James 1:5-6, "If any of you lack wisdom let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing wavering .." A kind, powerful promise!

I started the day with the guest model of Terreeeblay (see http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/72.html) and ended it at the new St. George Airport ... in the daylight of late afternoon so here's a low quality picture from my phone that I thought you still might like.

I tried a short magical mystery tour pretending I lived in Washington Fields to see if they have given those good folks a direct path to the airport, even on a dirt road.  No luck.  They have to go clear around Little Valley down River Road to the Arizona border then back up the new highway to the airport.  Something like 12 miles to go 3.  Bids are out to extend the new highway as far as Washington Dam Road.  Sounds good to me!

Random thoughts of the day ...

Happy 56th birthday to my brother Glen!

I was hoping for a walk in the woods today but it snowed too much so I visited a guest model of Terreeeblay, details at:  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/71.html

Feliz Cumpleanos

To celebrate the tortoise's birthday (first post was March 24, 2010), I went on a trip back to winter.  Early this morning I drove to the new St. George airport.  It took 38 minutes from my home.  I'm told it usually takes 45 -- in traffic I believe it.  But the sky was still not even thinking about getting light when the plane took off about 6:30 am, so I missed the traffic.

The waiting room at the airport is nice, they've tried to make it feel like a really large living room.  I'm amazed how many ipads I'm seeing here.

They are flying Canadair 200 regional jets to Salt Lake now.  Smooth.  Pretty quiet.  Fast -- 47 minutes of air time.  Not even enough time to give you the famous peanuts and liquid.

There was no Terreeeblay walk today.  I did walk, you can read the stats at http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/70.html.  We landed in Salt Lake at gate E5.  I then walked past the D gates, past the C gates, and down the corridor to B8 ... to get on another SkyWest regional jet, this one a little bigger Canadair 900.  I should get a little extra credit for messing with the luggage (you know my computer bag alone weighs as much as two bowling bags!)

In Reno I got a rental car for the fifty mile drive through the howling winds and snow to Gardnerville. (The highway department had signs up saying trucks and campers were not allowed through Washoe Valley).  Enterprise's idea of a compact car was a bright red Beetle with Utah plates.  They actually tried to talk me into upgrading to a Corolla, but I didn't need it, so I went with the people's car.  But it's not your father's Beetle.  The engine is in the front, there is not as much room, and the engine doesn't have the distinctive high pitched whine you would hear shifting 36 horses of rubber band power through the various gears to accomplish any kind of speed back in the day.  Although the modern version still didn't have much power in the passing lane.  The car did have great head room though -- a good foot above my head.

By 10:30 I had arrived and began to work.  It's all good!

365

365 ... that's how many posts there have been in the keep dad alive blog.  it makes this tortoise smile :)

We're having this interesting stretch of early spring weather.  The trees have bloomed.  We get a few sunny days, then some windy, cloudy, rainy ones.  It can't make up its mind whether it wants to be winter or spring.  I know how everyone I know would vote ...

Of course, with Terreeeblay you don't have to worry about the weather, because he's always ready to go! http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/69.html

A thought for today ...

Hebrews 11:6 - Without faith it is impossible to please him for he that cometh to God must believe that he is and that he rewards them that diligently seek him.

Faith takes consistent, diligent work!

I had another full day at work, followed by bishopric meeting.  It is amazing how much is done there.  If I didn't keep the minutes, send them to those who came to the meeting, and read them at the next meeting ... I wouldn't remember a small portion of it.  The Lord really does have his hand in the details!

I had another day ending visit with Terreeeblay ... read about it at

20 Mar 11

Elder Jeffrey Holland of the Quorum of Twelve Apostles came to La Verkin to our stake conference.

Think about that sentence for a minute.

I got to hear him three times over two days.  I write as fast as I can in a small blue journal when I go to special meetings like that.  I have fourteen pages of notes.  All the speakers were wonderful ... and Elder Holland was one of eight special guests we had at our conference.

I have been trying to write some of the highlights from these notes in my "I Believe" blog.  You can read about Elder Holland's presentation at the Saturday afternoon priesthood leadership session at: http://tinyurl.com/4wjjgmc.

I feasted on his words, his spirit, and his passion like I was a starving man at the feast buffet.

I can assure you that Elder Holland is indeed an apostle of our Lord Jesus Christ.

I always did like Marian the librarian ... http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/66.html  (come on, you know my unique sense of humor makes you smile and this IS the passionately smiling tortoise blog after all)

Here is a selection of verses I enjoyed today ...

2 Thessalonians 3:13 "But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing."

1 Timothy 4:12 "Let no man despise thy youth; but be thou an example of the believers, in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity."

... one of many reasons I have always valued work, and preparation for effective work ... 1 Timothy 5:8 "But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel."

18 Mar 11

Along with another excellent day at the office, I also enjoyed ...

  • listening to Chloe sing one of her songs from her school program today (grandpa is really impressed!)
  • talking with Sarah on the phone
  •
  • eating yummy barbeque chicken salad and key lime squares with Hilary, Maude, Megan, Riley, Kate, Ethan, and Floryne
  •
  • seeing the gunite pool after today's pour first hand with Willyne
  •
  • getting excited with Riley as he had fun with the dirt near the horses

Here's some news for all you "Bones" fans out there ... http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/65.html

And if my tax ideas weren't enough political thought for you this week, here is a thought provoking article I found.  It begins with a description of the author's personal experiences in a failed attempt to run for Arizona State Treasurer in 2010.  If you can get past his view of that, on page 2 you will find this gem,

"These two points of view can be traced back—mostly neatly, sometimes not—to the country’s founding, and the intellectual and political duel between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. Hamilton believed in providing capital and resources to an educated elite whose growing power would lift the new republic’s economy. He began America’s first industrial conglomerate and thought that businesses required government’s “interference and aid” through special subsidies and great infrastructure projects that would facilitate growth.
Jefferson had a different perspective. As the great twentieth-century historian Samuel Eliot Morison wrote in 1965, “Hamilton wished to concentrate power; Jefferson to diffuse power.” In 1776, he proposed giving every white adult male in Virginia 50 acres of land if they did not already own that much—an essentially egalitarian move to distribute opportunity in that agrarian society. Three decades later, having made the continental-scale purchase of the Louisiana Territory, he suggested 164-acre tracts be carved out and sold at $1.64 an acre and proposed a network of colleges to be built on grants donated by the federal government—visionary proposals that would finally overcome conservative opposition to see fruition in the form of the Homestead Act and the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Aouct, both passed in the spring of 1862.

Jefferson’s ideas carried the day because they fit the times. In 1800, 75 percent of the free workforce were independent farmers, and most of the rest were independent shopkeepers. Only 12 percent had what might be called a “boss.” The word was not even commonly used until the 1830s.

But with the rise of steam and steel, America began to creep toward industrialization and its larger, more complex economic organizations."

If you value learning from history and applying it to present day issues, whether you agree completely with the presenter or not, you will want to read the whole article by Andrei Cherny at http://www.democracyjournal.org/20/individual-age-economics.php?page=1.

I'd be interested in your thoughts and comments.

Thinking of Becca on Her Favorite Day

Here I am, wishing you and Becca a brilliant St. Patrick's Day!

Terreeeblay wishes you a jolly day too.  I gave him the day off and walked outside at lunchtime so that I could get energized and the streets near my office could see my green smile!  For technical details you can visit Terrible at:  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/64-rachel-for-you-thats-4-x-4-x-4-love.html

16 Mar 11

Well I threw out an idea that might be viewed as contrarian yesterday, so I guess I'll change subjects and go for it again today ...

I have submitted my bracket to Doug Jr's annual college basketball tournament challenge.  This year, I decided to go with the title game I thought would be ironic ... and fabulous if it went my way ... rather than the one I think is most likely to happen.  It's a wide open tournament this year anyway, so why not.  So you heard it here first ... Aztecs 81 Cougars 83 in the title game :)

Can't wait for the comments to roll in on this one.  Actually what will be interesting is to see which of my crazy ideas generates the biggest yawn:  replacing the income tax with a transactions tax, or jimmer time in the title game.  I'll be watching for sure!

So will terreeeblay from his high quality perch: http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/63.html

15 Mar 11

The 15th of March has been a fun day for me as long as I can remember.

I love to say "Beware the ides of March" even though I'm sure Brother Caesar wouldn't agree ... I have even been known to apply it to the infamous middle day of April ...

Actually, both are tax deadline days -- today's is for corporations, the one in April is for pretty much everyone else.  I still think they ought to do tax deadlines like license plate renewals -- your deadline would be on the 15th of the month offset six months from your birthday.

Or they could be really innovative and abolish the income tax and replace it with a transaction tax.  No tax returns.  No underground economy (just tax all cash withdrawals from banks and ATM machines at a substantially higher rate than the normal transaction tax rate to make up for the fact you can't track cash transactions).  No big brother knowing and looking at all the personal details of your life.  Refund everyone in America an amount equal to the tax on subsistence level income as an answer to the argument that this would be a regressive tax.  Put many thousands of folks like me out of work ... we'd have to get retrained to do something more productive ... hmmm capitalism actually working? novel concept ...

For those of you still checking on terreeeblay, you can do that here:  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/62.html

14 Mar 11

Woke up with a jolt when the alarm rang at 6:30.  I will get used to daylight time soon enough.  Today was not that day ... but there was no snooze alarm today either.  It rang at 6:30 and I was up at 6:30.  Not 6:31.

Saturday I was able to handle a 6% grade with Terreeeblay.  Today I started at 6% but six minutes into it had to back off to 4%.  That's how I did an average of 4.8%, for those of you who are monitoring me on day 71.  The specific details are over at terrible's tales:  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/61.html

I looked at sixteen tax returns today.  Including some fairly specific details as to what constitutes a special needs adoption.  If you are willing to take on the challenges of a special needs adoption, and the state certifies that it is one, the IRS will donate $13,000 towards the costs.  Of course, it will actually cost you much more than that, so it is still very much a labor of love.  Still, that is certainly not a trivial federal contribution, so it was worth the research for our clients who are involved (and we have more than one who are)

I read Phillipians this morning.  The 13th article of faith is my favorite.  I love the things that we seek after.  So I smiled reading Phillipians, because it made me think of that article of faith ...

13 Mar 11

I love this picture!

1.  I am so ready for spring - love those pretty blossoms and the warm air!
2.  Willyne really had the Spirit with her while speaking in Sacrament Meeting today.  So did her counselors when they spoke.  So did all the sisters when the sang.  It was wonderful.  And you can see it in the faces of Willyne and her mother in this picture!

I had to pull a few Houdini tricks to make it home for this special day.  It was SO worth it!

I love you, dear!

My top 3 list for today ...

visiting the J & H blog ... if you thought you knew everything about the miracle of Maude's birth, go have a read.  I'm more thankful than ever!

learning more about St. Patrick than I could ever believe possible.  no I did not visit a search engine, I did something much more brilliant, I read the Sonny blog!
.
and I visited with my old friend, terrible.  be sure to pronounce it correctly, I'm sure you know how by now :)  http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/57.html  We could also have lessons on pronouncing "connecticut" and "canadia" (where canadians live).  It must be coming up on mid-March, you know what Brother Caesar said about the ides ...  (can you tell i'm in a good mood?)

cheers, mates!

Scriptures I liked today ...

Galatians 6:7 "... for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap" (We really are what we eat...and breathe, drink, think about & do)

Galatians 6:9 "And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not" Thanks for staying the course!

Random thoughts today  ... nice to have 3 Despains with us in Sacrament Meeting today ... the testimonies seemed especially sweet ... I have two assistant ward clerks as of today and permission to cross-train them so they back each other up (the finance clerk will occasionally do membership and the membership clerk will occasionally do finance) ... I've been the de facto membership clerk in addition to the things the ward clerk specifically needs to do for 3 1/2 years so this is nice ... please understand I am expressing thanks now that this is happening, there was no complaining before ...

The tortoise and Terreeeblay continue on day 64 http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/54.html

Consider this today ... the answer to big multinational corporations having too much power is not giving government too much power.  If it's too big to fail it's too big.

I went home at 7 pm today, by March standards, that's the middle of the afternoon ... we had five Despains join Danielle at our house tonight.  We enjoyed a dinner of barbeque chicken salad and watched the movie Nim's Island.  I admit to being skeptical at first but wound up enjoying it.   I haven't seen Abigail Breslin in a movie yet where she didn't do a good job ... I just hope she can grow up to be more like ... I don't know, Ron Howard, maybe? ... than the last few child stars to come along ...

4 Mar 2011

The tortoise and Terreeeblay backed off of the 15% grade and did a burst at 8% instead.  It still produced a fast heartbeat and was a better way to go for me.  Check out the report at http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/53.html

A thought for today ... "There is growth incalculable to the human soul when it steps outside of itself and concerns itself with others." - Marion G. Romney

I talked with a variety of clients nonstop for 10 hours today.  I still had a voice but not much energy when I finished.  I'm thankful they want to see me, as I love to say, it beats the alternative!  (unemployment)

3 Mar 2011

The tortoise and terreeeblay are hanging on for dear life, but they are determined to be consistent.  The latest report is at http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/52.html

I went to Mesquite today to visit with three clients to do their tax returns.  Towards the end of the afternoon I went with Willyne to visit my brother David's grave.  She was kind enough to take this picture.

David was born on this day in 1958 and died several hours later.  He is buried here next to his brother Michael, who had a similar experience in 1962.  It is nice to remember them both.

The small colorful flowers are a nice touch, don't you think?

Finding Money To Maintain Roads

Day 61 walkin' with Terreeeblay ... http://terreeeblay.blogspot.com/2011/03/51.html

A scripture verse I enjoyed today ... 2 Corinthians 13:11 "... be of good comfort, be of one mind, live in peace; and the God of love and peace shall be with you."

I'm sure you know I like reading from diverse sources, so hopefully you won't be too surprised that I found the state of the State address by Texas governor Rick Perry interesting... http://j.mp/h4GhoQ

City Council met tonight for 4 1/2 hours.  Biggest item was continuing to work on the budget for the upcoming 2011-12 year that begins July 1.  We have some tough decisions to make -- one of the key ones is similar to the logic when you know you can save on major repairs on your car by getting regular oil changes.  You're short on money, so you postpone the oil change 2000 miles past the high end of the range you should be changing it on.  Now you're still short on money.  How many more miles do you wait before you really damage the car, costing several times more than the oil changes you didn't have enough money for in the first place.

In our case, it's regular yearly road maintenance.  We should do a reseal on a rotating basis on one-sixth of our roads every year so we get to all of them every six years.  We've already put it off, if we delay longer we'll have to rebuild many of the roads from scratch.  But it would take a tax increase in tough economic times to pay for it.

That's a tough budget discussion.  Last night was our third visit to the subject this season, there will be more in coming weeks.  Stay tuned for more news.

Big Blow

Happy 4th birthday, Kate!  We had a good time helping her celebrate this evening, she huffed, and puffed, and blew her candles out!  There are 50 more pictures at Beecher Bunch, so be sure to enjoy them there!

Today's thought:  2 Corinthians 9:7-8 "give, not grudingly..for God loveth a cheerful giver. And God is able to make all grace abound toward you.." A circle, just as King Benjamin also taught!
